The Problem with Hip Pain

A new Pregnancy tip from Sarah the Midwife Symphysiolysis- this is a common but lesser know symptom occurring in mid to late pregnancy (also known as symphysis pubis dysfunction). •What is it? It is an instability of the pelvis. This is due to the softening effects of pregnancy hormones on the ligaments holding the pelvis together. This makes space for the baby to pass through the pelvis at birth. However, sometimes this ‘loosening up’ can be rather painful.

Symphysiolysis can cause weakness in the hips and even an uneven gait. • So what can you do? • Firstly realise that if you have pain in the hip area, it may be symphysiolysis. • You could get a pelvic belt which gives support and alleviates some of the pain. • Increasing rest (always good for pregnancy) will prevent putting excessive strain on the already loose ligaments. • Avoid positions which exacerbate pain, such as spreading open the thighs.

• So, how can you give birth if you can't open your legs? Believe it or not, babies will still be born from legs that are only minimally open. Speak to your midwife, she should be able to help you find a good position for birthing. • Find a physical therapist or chiropractor who specialises in pregnancy. They can treat the condition and hopefully improve your functioning. Hope this helps Happy momma Happy baby Sarah the Midwife
